Autumn & winter comfort

Air conditioners that heat — efficient winter warmth.

The same inverter unit that keeps you cool in summer runs in reverse to warm your home in winter — moving heat instead of burning energy, for a fraction of the running cost of electric heaters.

Why heat-pump air conditioning for winter?

Up to 3× more efficient than electric heaters

A heat-pump split system moves heat rather than generating it, delivering around 3 kW of warmth for every 1 kW of electricity used — a fraction of the running cost of plug-in heaters.

One unit, two seasons

Cooling in summer and efficient heating in winter from a single inverter system — replacing both a fan and a space heater with one quiet, wall-mounted unit.

Even, steady warmth

Inverter technology holds your set temperature without switching on and off, so rooms stay comfortably warm instead of cycling between hot and cold.

Works down to sub-zero

Modern inverter heat pumps keep heating efficiently even when outdoor temperatures drop below freezing — far outperforming older reverse-cycle units in UK winters.

How it works

Cooling in summer, heating in winter

An inverter split system contains a reversible refrigerant circuit. In summer it pulls heat out of your room and releases it outside. In winter it simply runs in reverse — collecting heat from the outside air (even when it is cold) and pumping it indoors. Because it moves heat rather than generating it from electricity, it delivers far more warmth per pound than a conventional electric heater.

1

Absorbs outdoor heat

Even in cold air there is heat energy; the outdoor unit collects it via refrigerant.

2

Compresses & raises it

The inverter compresses the refrigerant, raising its temperature efficiently.

3

Warmth indoors

The indoor unit releases gentle, even warmth into your room — quietly and efficiently.

Heating with air conditioning — your questions

Can an air conditioner really heat a UK home in winter?

Yes. Modern inverter split-system air conditioners run in reverse as heat pumps, drawing warmth from the outside air — even when it is well below freezing — and delivering it indoors. For every 1 kW of electricity they use, they typically produce 3 kW or more of heat, making them one of the most efficient ways to warm a UK home.

How much does it cost to run an air conditioner for heating?

Because heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, running costs are far lower than traditional electric fan or convection heaters. A typical 2.5 kW inverter split system delivering warm air to a living room usually costs only a few pence per hour to run, depending on your electricity tariff and how well-insulated the room is.

Do I need a separate heating system as well?

Not necessarily. Many UK homes use an inverter heat-pump air conditioner as their main or supplementary heat source through autumn and winter, alongside their existing central heating. Because the same unit cools in summer, you get year-round comfort from one installation.

Are these units efficient when it is very cold outside?

Yes. Modern inverter heat pumps are designed to heat efficiently at outdoor temperatures well below 0°C, and far more efficiently than direct-electric or older reverse-cycle units. Performance does reduce as the outdoor temperature falls, but in a typical UK winter they remain a very efficient heat source.

How do I size an air conditioner for heating?

Sizing for heating follows the same logic as cooling — based on room size, insulation and how cold it gets. Our BTU calculator gives a quick estimate, and our team can size a unit for winter performance specifically. In general, the same unit that cools a room comfortably in summer will heat it efficiently in winter.
