The noisy part stays outside
In a split, multi-split or cassette system the compressor and fan sit in the outdoor unit. Indoors you only have an indoor coil and a fan, which is why these are the quietest way to cool a room.
Sleep and night modes
A night setting eases the set point up and drops the fan to its lowest speed over a few hours, so the room stays comfortable while the unit gets quieter as you fall asleep.
Inverter control, not on/off
Inverter units modulate their output to hold a steady temperature instead of switching the compressor on and off, which removes the repeated click-and-surge of fixed-speed machines.
No exhaust hose to rattle
Portables need a duct out of a window or door, and that duct is where a lot of the noise leaks back in. A wall or ceiling unit needs no temporary fitting at all.
