Air Conditioner Indoor Coil Frozen? Causes & Fixes

A thin layer of frost on an air conditioner coil is normal; a solid block of ice is not. A frozen coil stops the unit cooling, can leak water when it thaws, and usually points to poor airflow or low refrigerant.

Never chip the ice off — you’ll damage the delicate fins. Thaw it gently using the steps below.

Common causes

Dirty air filter

The #1 cause. A clogged filter starves the coil of warm room air, so the refrigerant over-cools the coil and ice forms.

Low refrigerant

Not enough refrigerant pressure drops the coil temperature below freezing. Needs a certified F-gas engineer to find and fix the leak.

Blocked or closed registers

Furniture or closed louvres blocking airflow cause the same coil-starvation as a dirty filter.

Fan speed set too low

Running on the lowest fan speed in cool mode can let the coil drop below freezing in humid weather.

Faulty blower motor

If the indoor fan isn’t spinning at full speed, airflow drops and ice builds.

How to fix it

  1. 1Turn the unit off and switch the thermostat to fan-only to start thawing the coil.
  2. 2Let the ice melt fully — never chip it off. Towel up the meltwater to stop a leak.
  3. 3Remove and wash the air filter, then dry it completely before refitting.
  4. 4Clear anything blocking the indoor unit’s airflow — furniture, curtains, closed louvres.
  5. 5Run the unit on a medium fan speed for 30 minutes and check the coil stays clear.
  6. 6If ice returns, the likely cause is low refrigerant — call a certified engineer.

When to call a pro: If the coil re-freezes after cleaning the filter and clearing the airflow, you almost certainly have a refrigerant leak. Only a certified F-gas engineer can find, repair and recharge the system.

Frequently asked

Can I scrape ice off my AC coil?

No. The aluminium fins are fragile and a knife or scraper will crush them, wrecking the coil. Let the ice melt with the unit on fan-only.

Why does my AC coil keep freezing up?

Usually a dirty filter or low refrigerant. If cleaning the filter doesn’t stop it, a refrigerant leak is the likely cause and needs a certified engineer.

Will a frozen coil damage my air conditioner?

It can. Ice blocks airflow, strains the compressor, and meltwater can leak indoors. Switch off and thaw it as soon as you notice it.
