Noisy Air Conditioner? Causes & Quiet Fixes

Some noise is normal — a gentle fan whoosh indoors and a steady hum from the outdoor compressor. But rattles, buzzes, squeals and grinding point to a loose part, a failing bearing or ice on the coil.

Pin the noise down with the guide below before deciding whether to fix it or replace the unit.

Common causes

Loose fan blades or screws

A rattle or ticking is often a loose fan blade, grille screw or panel vibrating at fan speed.

Failing indoor fan bearing

A squeal from the indoor unit often means a dry or worn fan-motor bearing. It will worsen and eventually seize.

Ice on the evaporator coil

A hissing or crunching sound can mean ice forming on the coil — usually a dirty filter or low refrigerant.

Compressor wear

A loud buzz or grind from the outdoor unit suggests the compressor is failing — the most expensive fault and often a replacement signal.

Vibration against the wall

A split’s outdoor unit can transmit vibration through its brackets into the wall, especially if the rubber mounts have perished.

How to fix it

  1. 1Note whether the noise is indoors, outdoors, or both, and the type (rattle, squeal, buzz, grind).
  2. 2Turn the unit off and tighten any visible grille and panel screws on the indoor unit.
  3. 3Clean the air filter — ice from poor airflow is a common cause of odd noises.
  4. 4Check the outdoor unit’s rubber mount feet haven’t perished or compressed flat.
  5. 5Run the unit on its lowest fan setting; if the noise persists or is a grind/buzz from the compressor, switch off.
  6. 6A compressor or bearing fault needs an engineer; if the unit is old, a quiet new inverter may be better value.

When to call a pro: A grinding compressor or squealing indoor bearing won’t fix itself and usually means a replacement part. If the unit is more than ~8 years old, a quiet modern inverter split is often cheaper than the repair.

Frequently asked

How loud should a split system be indoors?

A modern inverter split runs at roughly 19–26 dB on low — softer than a whisper. If yours is clearly louder or rattling, something is wrong.

Why is my outdoor AC unit buzzing loudly?

A loud buzz often points to the compressor or its start capacitor. Switch the unit off and have a qualified engineer inspect it.

Which air conditioner is quietest?

Inverter split systems are quietest because the compressor is outdoors. See our Quietest Split System round-up for the lowest-noise units.
